epaselect epa12389278 Destroyed and flooded houses in the village of Blatten during the groundbreaking ceremony for its reconstruction project, known as 'Blatten 2030,' just 3,5 months after a landslide destroyed the village, in Blatten, Switzerland, 19 September 2025. On 28 May 2025, a section of the Birch Glacier collapsed in the Loetschental Valley, Canton of Valais, burying the village under an avalanche of rock, ice, and debris. Approximately 90 percent of Blatten, including 130 houses and the parish church, was buried under the rubble. The debris also blocked the Lonza River, creating a large lake and raising serious concerns about potential flooding. The reconstruction of the village is planned to be completed by 2030.
