epaselect epa12159622 Calin Georgescu (C), the independent candidate who won the first round of Romania's annulled 2024 presidential elections, waves to supporters as he leaves the General Prosecutor's Office headquarters for a hearing, in Bucharest, Romania, 06 June 2025. Georgescu was announced today by the prosecutors of the General Prosecutor's Office that they have decided to extend his judicial control by another 60 days, in the file in which he is being investigated for committing six crimes. Georgescu, allegedly supported by Russia, was questioned by prosecutors on 26 February 2025 as part of an investigation into election fraud, including actions against the constitutional order and false statements about campaign financing. A judge from the General Prosecutor's Office imposed a judicial control measure, which Georgescu unsuccessfully appealed against, and the Central Election Bureau banned his candidacy for 2025 repeated presidential elections.
