EU/Presidency: Embassy in Paris exhibits Portuguese artists

Paris, Jan. 19, 2021 (Lusa) - Works by several Portuguese artists such as Joana Vasconcelos, Bela Silva, Rui Chafes and José de Guimarães display at the Portuguese embassy in Paris during the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The furniture designed by Joana Vasconcelos for the French brand Rochebobois has invaded one of the embassy premises' halls, and a Bela Silva work welcomes visitors arriving at Casa de Portugal, in the French capital. A "revolution" thought by the ambassador Jorge Torres-Pereira.

"We remembered to mark the presidency through a small revolution at the Embassy and that we could use this space to exhibit contemporary Portuguese artists linked to France," the diplomat said in an interview with Lusa.

The embassy will also receive works by Vhils, José Pedro Croft, Francisco Tropa, Jorge Martins and Miguel Branco, completing a circuit of Portuguese contemporary artists.

The diplomat said, "culture must be an integral part" of the European project and a presence in disseminating the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union in Paris.

"Culture does not fall within the remit of the European institutions, but there is no real progress if a cultural policy is not at the centre of our attention", he said.

Portugal took over its fourth presidency of the Council of the EU on 1 January, which will run through the first half of 2021, succeeding Germany and ahead of Slovenia, under the slogan "Time to act: for a fair, green and digital recovery".
