EU/Presidency: Education minister picks 'technological, social, educational leaps' as main challenges

Lisbon, Feb. 18, 2021 (Lusa) - Portugal's minister of education chose three major strategic challenges for the future of education and training in the European Union, which involve "leaps" in technology, society and education.

"We are living in particularly complex, worrying and unpredictable times, in the grip of a pandemic. The best way to do this is to build our common future today, as the EU27," Tiago Brandão Rodrigues wrote in a document published on Wednesday in the context of the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union.

This "common future", the minister said, involves the ability to make a technological leap for pedagogical innovation, a social leap to combat inequalities and an educational leap to "accelerate the path of equal opportunities and success".

"These are the strategic challenges we face, and these are the steps we invite you to take with us," he added.

In the preface to the publication, available on the Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics page, the Portuguese minister also wrote that one aim of the Portuguese presidency is to strengthen a duality between convergence and plurality in the European Education Area.

"A space that ensures rights and extends opportunities to all citizens living in it, valuing national singularities and learning from the best of what is done in each country," he explained.

The document, published in the scope of the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union, where the minister left his message, presents the education and training system concerning the policies in progress and the evolution of some indicators.

Among the indicators are the illiteracy rate, the percentage of the population with higher and secondary education, pre-schooling rates, early school leaving, retention and dropout in basic education, and completion of secondary education.

The document also refers to adult education and training, education and digital skills and equal opportunities as a constitutional principle organising the education system.

On Friday, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues chairs the informal videoconference of European Union (EU) education ministers. They will discuss equity of access, inclusion and success for all in education and training.
