EU/Presidency: European commissioner debates Future of Europe in parliament

Lisbon, Feb. 11, 2021 (Lusa) - The vice-president of the European Commission for Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Suica, is on Thursday taking part in a debate in the Portuguese parliament on the Conference on the Future of Europe, which is due to begin next May.

The European commissioner will be heard by videoconference by the European Affairs Committee on the Conference aimed at promoting a broad debate for citizens on the challenges of the European Union (EU).

Last Wednesday, EU member states agreed on the format proposed by the Portuguese presidency of the Council for the Conference on the Future of Europe, which was supposed to start in May 2020 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Portugal put an end to a long impasse over who should chair the forum by proposing that it should come under the authority of the three European institutions' leaders - the Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament - with the 'assistance' of an executive committee.

The Conference, a discussion forum on Europe's challenges, should run for two years, with multiple events throughout Europe, starting in Strasbourg, France, on 9 May, Europe Day, if the Covid-19 pandemic so permits.
