Lisbon, Feb. 2, 2021 (Lusa) - Portugal's prime minister met on Tuesday with the CEO of the multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and received assurances that production capacity for vaccines against Covid-19 would be expanded to meet the delivery schedule in the European Union.
"I had a video meeting today with Pascal Soriot, AstraZeneca's global CEO, who reiterated his commitment to boosting his production capacity in Europe to meet the delivery schedule for vaccines to the European Union," António Costa wrote on his personal Twitter account.
"Every day of delay in the vaccination process is a day lost, and lives are at risk. AstraZeneca will supply the European Union with 9 million additional doses of its anti-Covid vaccine, a total of 40 million doses in the first quarter, an increase of 30% over the company's previous proposal," Costa said as Portugal is chairing the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In his message, Costa said he continued "to work together with the European Commission, in what is another step in the long marathon to protect Europeans' lives and health.
